Nowt for me today, but recently have seen 3 mice on the nut feeder!

A couple of weeks ago saw a hedgehog in the garden, which was lovely as we used to get lots, but I haven't seen any for a long time.

My mother has a couple of badgers visiting every evening.

Hedgehogs are a pain in my garden cause the dog finds them and tries to get at them. Means we have to go out and get him in late at night, he just won't leave them otherwise.

Could be something to do with the building work Cap'n. If you want to encourage the birds, keep putting out food and water, and they'll come back as they see everything's settling.

OK, two bits of wildlife news.

Firstly, not Welsh, but this time Scots!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/tayside_and_central/7423903.stm

A great reason to stop smoking Praise you!

Secondly - the reason why I missed lots of Springwatch last night.
Awful quality pics, so please forgive that, but I was a long distance away, inside the house, in the dark, and taking photos through the glass of the patio doors.

There are three cubs and a mother fox, but I couldn't get them all in shot at once.
We were planning to tidy up those heaps of grass and piles of wood and branches, but now we realise it's a playground, it seems as though it'd be a shame.

aaaaw, lovely, don't think I've ever come across a hedgehog in real life - my Dad used to have regular visitors to his garden, and he fed them every night with dog food Very Happy

I must get my interest in nature from him, as he was very fond of his garden and all the creatures, especially the birds and the squirrels.

eeuuuw I hate them - and there was a woman on breakfast tv this morning talking about economising - she was a 'pensioner' but looked just fantastic.

One of her tips was gathering snails and letting them slide across the backs of your hands, as apparently their slime is like 'serum' (that can sell for about £20 a bottle) and gets rid of wrinkles .

YUCK!

Post subject:  do I need to report this?
Posted from: United Kingdom Reply with quote

Whilst out cycling a couple of days ago, I was somewhat startled to see a large mammal laying on the grass verge. I was moving fast enough not to be entirely sure it was dead, so I turned round and went back, heart pumping - you know that adrenalin flood when things are just a little out of the ordinary? Definitely dead, but not for more than a day and probably much less; I thought it was an otter at first and felt utterly dismayed. The more I thought about it, the less likely this seemed although I couldn't see its throat and chest, the way it was slightly curled and resting on its front. So - mink, then?

I went on with my ride, but on reaching home I grabbed the camera and went back in the car. Disturbing the grass a little around it revealed a tail which looks much more in keeping with mink. I will post some photos here when I get a chance but, in the meantime, do I have to report the sighting of mink to anyone, or have I dreamed that? I've tried searching online for "mammal recorder" and similar terms, but not found anything very helpful.

It was very sad; a beautiful creature, whatever its misdemeanours as a species (although I read that these may have been largely over-stated?).
