Please can the foodies help? I know you can roast a pumpkin in halves, and scrape out the cooked flesh, but if you want to end up with cubes of pumpkin, how do you go about it? Peeling a pumpkin in order to chop cubes doesn't seem likely somehow?!

The Jolly Rosey likes this post.

Dinnae ken if it be a "Halloween" pumpkin ye be got, but apparently they np be very good fer cookin'.

Quote:
What is the difference between a sugar pumpkin and a regular pumpkin (like you make into a jack-0-lantern)?

The jackolantern type pumpkins are not that great for cooking.
The smaller ones (they are called pie pumpkins around here)
are the ones to use in recipes. The two do look a bit different when compared side by side.
They have a better taste.
You can use either kind but you will get a much better taste with the sugar or pie pumpkins.

The inside of a Sugar pumkin:

If youve ever cleaned out a jackolantern then you know that it is more hollow than this picture. Thats because its grown FOR the shell to carve into.

The pie punkins are grown FOR the insides. Notice the thicker shell packed all the way through with pulp.

Thanks for the recipes! Mine's definitely a small, cooking pumpkin rather than one for carving. Dunno about the one Liz has?

I love pumpkin Pie but seem to remember that I found that the palaver needed to cook and prepare the pumpkin for it wasn't worth the hassle - I ended up having the MIL bring me a tin of it ready prepared from Waitrose - I must have been desperate Laugh Out Loud Laugh Out Loud
